Albuquerque is best known for the Chile Drop on new years eve, the New Mexico answer to the more tradtional ball drop, while across the city there will be parties and celebration aplenty to help you welcome the new year in style.
If you're in Albuquerque over the festive season, then we also recommend you check out the city's famous Old Town with its museums, restaurants, adobe architecture, outdoor vendors selling their crafts and go see San Felipe de Neri Church, built in 1793.
The Old Town is also a great place for Christmas Eve as the community gathers in the Old Town's main plaza to enjoy the luminaria displays, listen to carollers and feel festive!
Take a balloon ride with unforgettable views over the Rio Grande Valley as the sun rises or sets depending on whether or not you're a morning person or not and for some amazing views over Rio Grande Valley, take the amazing Sandia Peak Tramway, these cable cars travel for 3 miles from Albuquerque and the top of Sandia Peak, this is also great place to start your hikes.
(Please check locally as nothing as yet announted) One of the most popular new years eve events in Albuquerque for a few years now takes place on Nob Hill Main Street where they host the annual Chile Drop (or Chilli Drop if you prefer)
As the name suggests, this involved a a 15ft long chilli that drops at midnight! This does get very busy so make sure to get there with time to spare.
Explora Science Center and Children's Museum hold an annual Noon Year's Eve celebration at 12 noon, with balloons, experiments, music and a countdown.
(Nothing announced for this year) Another fantastic new years eve event in Albuquerque offering a great range of family fun to see in the new year takes place down at the Civic Plaza where you can enjoy entertainment, live music, a range of food stalls, cocktails and ice skating on the Plaza rink.
This gathering starts around 8pm and goes on until after the countdown and champagne toast at Midnight.
