When it comes to NYE in New York, most people automatically think of the ball drop in Times Square, or the many lavish parties that take place in the clubs, hotels and restaurants of Manhattan, but if you happen to step off the island and head out across the water to Brooklyn, you'll find no shortage of fantastic new year events to help you mark the occasion in style.
You'll probably find you'll save a little money as well - while Brooklyn certainly still isn't cheap you won't be paying the full NYC new years eve premium rates that you'll find over on Manhattan
The ball drop is all well and good, but it's kind of lacking in the fireworks department, so if you like to see in the new year with some spectacular pyrotechnics, then Brooklyn has much more to offer.
Head to the biggest new years eve display in Prospect Park, a free event which has been taking place for almost 4 decades now. You can enjoy live music entertainment from around 10pm in the evening in the park's Grand Army Plaza, the climax of the event sees fireworks launched over the park from Long Meadow on the stroke of midnight.
As you can imagine, this free event does draw a huge crowd, so be sure to get there early for the best viewing spots.
This is a great new years eve option if you fancy doing something a little different - join a walking tour across the iconic Brooklyn Bridge late on new years eve, also including visits to the World Trade Center Grounds and memorial and City Hall Park.
The highlight of the event is at midnight, when the tour is times to be right out on the bridge, giving you a great view of fireworks in all directions across the city skyline, across both Manhattan and Brooklyn. Tours are available in several different languages, you can book your space online here.
(Nothing confirmed for this year) Right down at the southern tip of Brooklyn, Coney Island also hosts an annnual new years eve party on their famous boardwalk at Luna Park, with live music from 9pm and normally fireworks at midnight, more details, once announced can be found here.
With most of the TV stations concentrating on the ball drop in Times Square, there may not be much in the way of live coverage of the Brooklyn new year fireworks, but if we find any of the local TV networks providing coverage we'll have the links right here.
There is a live webcam on the Brooklyn Bridge which should capture some fireworks next year:
And of course if you do still want to watch the ball drop, the full event is live online right here on New Years Eve Live:
Brooklyn's hotels will still be pricey on new years eve, but there will be some savings to be had when compared to Manhattan, so it's well worth checking them out, even if you're still planning on heading across the water for the celebrations.
You can search for deals and book online at all of the best Brooklyn hotels here.
