Dusseldorf is another German city with a very popular new years eve celebration, with spectacular midnight fireworks displays over the river Rhine that runs right through the city, while the famous Alstadt old town area is packed with crowds as the many bars, hotels and restaurants host their own parties to help welcome the new year in style.
If you are spending the festive season in Dusseldorf then there are plenty of other activities to keep you entertained and make the most of your stay. Particularly popular are the Christmas markets that you find in all the major German towns and cities at this time if year. In Dusseldorf the most popular are the Christmas Market on the Marktplatz market square outside the City Hall, the Engelchenmarkt or Little Angel Market on Heinrich-Heine-Platz and the Sternchenmarkt or Little Star Market at Stadtbruckchen.
There are fireworks displays right across the city as many people like to hold their own displays at their new year parties, including many of the hotels and restaurants, but the main fireworks are centred over the Rhine, so that's where to head for so see the best pyrotechnic displays.
Many people head straight to the busy Alstadt area and the scenic Rheinpromenade that borders the river, but it can get very, very crowded here so if it's more peaceful spots you prefer for your fireworks viewing then you might be better to head out onto one of the Rhine bridges for a panoramic skyline view.
Another option is to find a hotel or restaurant that offers a good view without having to venture out onto the streets.
The Hyatt Regency is a good option for this, while possibly the most premium venue would have to be the Gunnewig Rheinturm Restaurant Top 180 and the Bar & Lounge M 168 located at the top of the city's iconic Rhine Tower, where you have panoramic city views from over 170 metres up in the sky. You will of course need to book in advance if you want to head there on new years eve! Visit the venue here.
Another excellent way of securing a front row view of the fireworks is to take to the water with one of the many new years eve river cruise options, usually including dinner, drinks and entertainment.
Some of the most popular options are the Weisse Flotte vessels MS Dusseldorf and MS Stadt Dusseldorf, see their full range of new year cruises here.
After the fireworks are over by about 12.30am there will still be plenty of parties running into night, with many revellers staying out well into the early hours of new years day.
Top venues and events to look out for include Silvesterparty an den Kasematten (a free event with live music where you will also get a front row fireworks view), Pitcher Silvester special, Club Boui Boui Silvester Spezial and Club Elitar Silvester Party at the Radisson Blu Media Harbor Hotel.
As mentioned above, many hotels have great new year parties, and if you find somewhere on the river you'll also get great fireworks views included for free! Top recommendations include the INNSIDE Dusseldorf Hafen, Courtyard by Marriot Hafen, Radisson Marina Centre and the Hyatt Regency.
