New Years Eve in Lisbon, Portugal's capital city, will make for a memorable celebration. Home to half a million people, this stunning city is rich in history and teeming with architectural delights that makes exploring a must, and when the new year arrives you'll be treated to some spectacular fireworks over the city.

Plan to visit places like Jeronimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jeronimos), St George's Castle (Castelo de Sao Jorge), Torre de Belem, the National Azulejo Museum, the church Igreja de Sao Roque and for a more modern feel to the capital go to Parque das Nacoes for some shopping and relaxation. Jump on a cable car for some great views or just wander around and take in the sights.

Lisbon has a large selection of museums to peruse including Museu Coleccao Berardo, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga and Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, Museu do Oriente which should all get your cultural juices flowing.

For something a little different you might like to take a ride on the Elevador de Santa Justa for some lovely views over the city. While you are out exploring remember you have to ride on one of the city's furniculars at least once!

During December you can summon the festive spirit with a wander down Avenida da Liberdade with its fabulous lights and decorations all the way down to Edward VII Park and its Christmas Village.

New Years Eve Fireworks

Lisbon knows how to do New Years Eve well, with an impressive fireworks display over Praca do Comercio (also know as Terreiro do Paco) where thousands of people gather for an epic evening of live entertainment.

Or venture to Torre de Belem for their pyrotechnics and celebrations. Watch as the fireworks make a spectacular display over the Tagus River and don't forget that you can get some great viewing spots for the fireworks from St George's Castle or Belvedere of San Pedro de Alcantara.

If you are staying in or near Parque das Nacoes, they also have their own fireworks display at Vasco da Gama Tower all within easy reach of the bars and restaurants.

Parties & Events

The bars, clubs and hotels of Lisbon will have their own New Year events planned, get your reservations and tickets in advance, as with most places at New Year, they will book up quickly. We'll post a selection of our favourite options for new years eve 2024 right here a little closer to the time.

For a great selection of nightlife, you might want to head over to Rua Nova do Carvalho (also known as Pink Street!) which is bustling with bars clubs and places to have an amazing evening.
