Playa del Carmen is a stunning place to be on New Years Eve, not only can you top up that tan on the gorgeous white sand beaches and swim in the turquoise blue sea but you can really immerse yourself in some of Mexico's history and seek out ancient Mayan ruins.

Pack your swimming cozzie and get in the water. There are cenotes (underwater caves, sinkholes) and lagoons to explore, diving, coral reef snorkelling, freediving, sailing, sunset catamaran cruise and lazing on yachts.

Visit some of the fantastic parks for some jungle fun and adventure like Xplor Park with its ziplines, stalagmites and stalactites caverns! If you're more a landlubber, then take a trip to the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum and if you have some extra time on your hands then perhaps venture further afield to Chichen Itza and the Temple of Warriors. Take a stroll down the main street, 5th Avenue (La Quinta) a pedestrianised area where you can peruse the shops and market stalls and grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants or beach cafes.

This is a great spot for some people watching and as the evening arrives, witness the street preparing for its bustling nightlife with street performers and entertainers. While in town, try and bag yourself some tickets for Cirque du Soleil Joya show at The Cirque du Soleil Theater, Riviera Maya. A mesmerising show that would be a highlight to your holiday! There is also the Frida Kahlo Riviera Maya Museum on 5th Avenue esq. Calle 8, Centro to pop on your to-do list to learn more about this artists life and artwork.

New Years Eve Parties & Events

Playa del Carmen is an amazing place to celebrate New Years Eve. Not only do the clubs, restaurants, bars and hotels step it up a notch with celebrations but you can always make your way to the beach to watch the fireworks light up the sky over the glorious Caribbean, then head on to a club to keep the party going all the way through to dawn before heading back to the beach, with thousands of others, to watch the first sunrise of the year.

Party animals should head to 5th Avenue and 12th Street for clubs, bars, restaurants and crowds of people making merry! These are most definitely Playa del Carmen hot spots for revellers and dancing in the street. It's wall to wall packed here!

You've come all this way for some winter sun, sea and sand, so what better way to bring in the new year than on the beach surrounded by crowds of people dancing along to some top DJs, Mamita's Beach Club offers all this along with the countdown to midnight, watching the fireworks and having an amazing time in this slice of paradise!

Something to note: With all the bar and club events, you really do need to make sure you've got your tickets in advance. Playa del Carmen is jam pack full on New Years Eve, there will be massive queues for places, so don't be left out of these amazing festivities!

If you're a bit of a water baby, then perhaps celebrating New Year on a gorgeous yacht is for you! You and your nearest and dearest can take to the Caribbean seaand bring in the new year with champagne at midnight, dancing under a blanket of stars!
