Porto on new years eve sees street parties and fireworks as the local population tend to head outdoors for the bulk of their NYE celebrations.

Steeped in history and culture, this is an ideal place to come and explore and see some of the beautiful architecture, old and new, including Clerigos Church, Coliseu do Porto, Sao Joao National Theatre and Casa da Musica.

If you have the time and are a book worm like me, then visit Livraria Lello, one of Portugal's oldest book stores,the interior has to be seen to be believed!

Want to get active, climb the 240 steps to the top of Torre dos Clerigos for some stunning views over Porto and on an evening visit the historic Ribeira district for some down time and just see the city come to life after dark.

But remember, when in Porto, visit one of the may port cellars and try some of the delicious fortified wines.

New Years Eve Fireworks

If you are in Porto over the new years eve period then you must head to the city centre, especially close to or on Avenida dos Aliados (Aliados Avenue) where you can get in the party mood with music, dancing and the fireworks show at midnight.

There are usually thousands of people gathering here to welcome in the New Year.

New Year Parties & Events

The hotels, restaurants, clubs and bars in Porto will have their own New Years Eve offerings, with special menus, gala dinners, and parties. As Porto gets incredibly busy at this time of year, you will want to make sure you make your reservations well in advance.

NYE River Cruises

There are also New Years Eve river cruises for those who want to dine on board, open a bottle of champagne and see the fireworks from the water.

Christmas Lights

If you head to the city centre (Baixa do Porto) at any time during December and right up until early January you can enjoy the Christmas lights and decorations or visit the huge Christmas tree on General Humberto Delgado Square.

While you're in the area you can go buy gifts on Santa Catarina Street and stop for a festive drink and a Bolo Rei (King cake).
