You would imagine they are sick of hearing it, but when someone says Scranton, first thing that pops in my head is the TV show The Office, but this historic city is so much more than that and is an amazing place to spend New Years Eve.

For those who like to get out and active then make a beeline for Montage Mountain, which offers you a real plethora of activities, ranging from skiing, snow boarding, tubing and air boarding to some fabulous night skiing. Montage Mountain is perfect for both beginners and experts alike!

Challenge yourself with black diamond and double black diamond slopes! There's also live entertainment in Slocum Hollow where you can grab a bite to eat and warm yourself with a drink or two. If you are a railfan then you are in for a real treat, Scranton is nicknamed Electric City from the days of the electric passenger trolley line. You can still take a ride on a trolley through some of Scranton's landmarks when you visit the Electric City Trolley museum, it's a great day out to learn about rail history and explore the antique trolleys.

If that's not enough, you can head on over to Steamtown National Historic Site and step back in time as you explore the restored and in some cases very rare train cars, learn about their history and, depending on the season, even take a ride on a real steam train.

If you're a fan of magic, you won't want to miss the Houdini Museum where you can learn more about the world famous illusionist Harry Houdini and enjoy an interactive magic show, an amazing experience for all ages to enjoy. (Best to book in advance - although it looks like the museum will be closed until 2024, but please do check with venue). Just get out there and explore, Scranton has many wonderful architectural delights to see and museums to visit, so there is plenty to keep you occupied!

NYE Parties & Events

Slightly further out, there is The Waterfront at Silver Birches New Years Eve Bash with dinner buffet, DJ and countdown at midnght - Tickets here.

Bars hotels and restaurants normally have special New Years Eve events planned, it's best to double check with the venues as events may be announced very last minute. Try out the Backyard Ale House on Linden Street. The Sheraton Four Points normally holds an annual bash with music and a balloon drop.

At nearby Mohegan Sun Pocono they usually have quite a few New Years Eve events to chose from.

Please make sure to check locally with venues and organisers as many events may be subject to change or be cancelled with very little notice, so best to be sure before making any travel plans.

If you are planning on dining out on New Years Eve, then remember to book in advance, so you won't be disappointed (or left hungry), there are many fab restaurants to choose from: Cooper's Seafood House, State Street Grill, Thai Rak Thai Restaurant.
