Stockholm is a great place to spend your new years eve, with a spectacular fireworks display capping off a night of celebrations throughout this picturesque Scandinavian harbour city.

Stockholm is beautiful city to visit anytime of year, but come winter and the new years eve period it looks like something right out of a fairy tale, especially when covered in snow. It offers visitors an array of activities including skiing, ice skating, a chance to marvel at the most beautiful sunsets, visit the Christmas markets, museums and palaces and don't forget to try some of the Glogg!

Popular areas on New Years Eve include gathering at The City Hall where locals and tourists alike venture to welcome the new year and watch the fireworks light up the sky.

You can also visit the Old Town and Gamla Stan which is another popular local hot spot on New Years Eve.

Best Viewing Spots

The relatively flat landscape of Stockholm makes watching the fireworks pretty easy from a vairty of different places. Those in the Sodermalm area can watch the fireworks from Skeppsholmen, then venture into the bars and clubs on Gotgatan.

You could always just grab your bottle of champagne and wander to the waterfront area, or if you are near to the Skanstullsbron or Västerbron bridges, these are great places to stop and watch the fireworks.

For a more panoramic view of the city and to see all the firework displays many people opt for Fjallgatan or Skinnarviksberget.

Visit Skansen, where the official countdown is held, there's music and speeches before the grand fireworks display at midnight. This is a very popular area to gather and it is televised for the rest of Sweden to see.

Things to do

If you're in Stcokholm over the Christmas an new year period then there are plenty of recommded sites and activites to incorporate into your visit.

Visit the Old Town for its cafes, markets and boutiques all within its wonderfully medieval streets. Take the chance to see the Stockholm Cathedral and the Royal Palace among many other great sights in this area.

If you're looking to glam it up in Stockholm, the district of Ostermalm should be high on your lost of places to visit, peruse the designer shops and antique dealers, this is where people come to spend some money!

Go see the sites, spend the day exploring but remember to take time for Fika (coffee, cake and a chat!) sounds like a good plan to me.
