In the USA there has long been a tradition of heading into the mountains for the holidays. It's easy to see the attraction, the traditional fairytale style Christmas setting on snow, log cabins with burning open fires and narrow mountain streets lit up with the bright Christmas lights provide a lovely setting.

If there's the chance to fit in some skiing too then so much the better, which helps explain the enduring NYE popularity of Vail, perched high up in the Colorado mountains.

I'm a huge fan of the traditional snowy winter landscape to the idea of spending the holiday period up in the Colorado mountains really appeals, although I have to confess I'm not much of a skier so it would be more the log cabins and roaring open fires I would be heading there for!

NYE Parties & Events

There are normally several events taking place in Vail to help the process of welcoming in the New Year, offering free public events throughout the holiday season including the Tree Lighting Ceremony and Silent Discos.

The main public events on new years eve itself are usually the Torchlight Parade and Fireworks at Golden Peak, which gets the evening underway at 6.15pm and features Skiers and riders from Vail Ski and Snowboard School will come down Golden Peak illuminated with glow sticks, which has the dramatic effect of producing a trail of light down the mountainside that can be viewed for miles around.
